Virtually everything that is known about the elections for members of the
Ratification Convention of 1788 and the participation of the members can be
found in volumes 8-10 of Merrell Jenson, John Kaminski, et al., eds.,
DOCUMENTARY HISTORY OF THE RATIFICATION OF THE CONSTITUTION.

The local context may be more difficult to determine because of no newspaper
coverage of local events in the western counties of Virginia. The various
collections of Preston Family Papers and related correspondence (Library of
Congress and Virginia Historical Society, chiefly, but also in Draper
Manuscripts, Wisconin State Historical Society) contain a good deal of
detail about the area at about that time.

I suspect that petitions to the General Assembly (Record Group 78, Library
of Virginia) may contain some complaints about taxes or western concerns
that could be relevant. A trip to Richmond to read the Montgomery County
petitions for the years surrounding 1788 might be in order, but the
petitions have been filmed, and you should inquire about whether they can be
obtained on Interlibrary Loan.

Subject: Delegates to Ratification Convention

I'm working on antiratification sentiment in western Virginia, particularly
in
Montgomery County. While I have the names and votes of Montgomery
county's two delegates (Walter Crockett and Abram Trigg) I do not have
the election results or how those two delegates were chosen by the
county. Does anyone have any information about elections of the
constitutional convention delegates, particularly from western virginia and
the district of kentucky? thanks in advance!
