I will admit, I am colored by Prince Edward County at
the moment, as I am doing a lot of research towards my
book in that area, but I think that it can be brought
in on this.

Isreal on the Appomatox is an excellent book in
showing free blacks of the time. The Isreal Hill
community thrived from a strong work ethic and on a
public level. Farmville Baptist was founded with one
of the members of that community. There were white
women openly married or living with black men and this
was left alone.

The only thing that annoyed me, was the law stating a
black man could not testify against a white.

From what I have seen, there may have been some
patronizing, but for the most part it was a solid
working relationship that shaped the area.
