History buffs will be excited to hear of a presentation by Alison Herring
on the unpublished Powell Family Papers from Civil War Winchester on
Saturday, February 2nd, 2019. The event begins at 11am at Handley Library
and is free!

The Powells were dedicated to the education and empowerment of young women
and were operating a boarding school on Braddock St. in Winchester. The key
reasons to attend the event include: (1) Hear how the Civil War impacted
teachers and students in Winchester. (2) Learn why Robert E. Lee sent his
daughter, Mildred, to school with the Powells in that turbulent town. (3)
Discover why the death of Lloyd Powell was so notable and has been included
in most Civil War books on Winchester. (4) These unpublished papers
represent unheard voices and provide fresh historic details. (5) Learn how
the great actress Katharine Hepburn has strong ties to Civil War
Winchester. Use the following link to learn more about the event and
