I seem to remember my mother using 'CAMPHO PHENIQUE' (SIC?) it was a very
arometic oily substace. Of course, mother use this for a cure all for
everything. Also, would olive oil be something that would smother the
chiggers and not be damamging to the skin or tender areas that the chigger,
ticks and other varmints of this type congregate?

Don't use fingernail polish, use fingernail polish remover. It's the mixture
of oil and acetone that gets them. You can prevent them by dusting your
clothing with powdered sulphur.
