On the George H. Thomas point, at the start of the war he contemplated
leaving the Union army and indicated as much in two letters to Governor John
Letcher of Virginia.  However, in the end, after some vacillating, he stayed
in the Union.  He was clearly a man of integrity, but the fact that he had
some trouble deciding on which side to serve is further evidence that there
was substance to the state sovereignty position in his mind.
