If you want to see what the walk home was like, the last chapter of "War Reminiscences of William Frierson Fulton II" covers the entire trip of some of the men from the 5th Alabama Battalion from Appomattox on April 12 until they reached Montgomery, Alabama on May 11.

I wonder if any one has produced a map showing what units were where in the CSA at the time of the surrender? Getting home via a 2 day walk is one thing going from Appomattox to the Valley, but McGowan's South Carolinians at Petersburg and various other units from farther south must have had an incredible time getting back. One wonders how many actually made it back as compared with those who died along the road?
