Moderation--as in self control, with the purpose, among others, of promoting sociability and civility--was a central value of Anglican gentility in Virginia.  Its the sort of thing that George Washington and Robert Edward Lee, among others, worked hard to model in their personal and public lives.

In this instance and for our purposes, I think it much behooves us to emulate our ancestors.
