Thanks for this encouraging update on a research asset of special importance concerning the 14-year-old, still-evolving process to shape what we have and don't have at post-Army Fort Monroe--the site of what Ed Ayers called, in a June 2011 Chronicle of Higher Education interview, "the greatest moment in American history." As a practical matter in that process, Virginia's governors have exercised more power than anyone.
(For a concise update on where things stand with Fort Monroe, please see a recent Washington Post opinion piece: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-va-fort-that-launched-self-emancipating-black-heroes-deserves-better/2018/09/21/8ca0d0b2-bb72-11e8-bdc0-90f81cc58c5d_story.html or the non-paywalled copy at http://www.fortmonroenationalpark.org/WashPostFortMonroeOpEd.htm )
