I believe it was no less an authority than General Robert E. Lee who said
something like "You cannot have an army without music."  Note the importance
of music and self-expression in the current flap about the Pep Band at UVa.
And of course there is that wonderful story about how the strains of DIXIE
caused the tired, beaten soldiers of the Army of Northern Virginia to
straighten up, get a spring in their step, etc. (at Appomatox, I believe it
was.)
