The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the
World of Mental Illness by Jack El-Hai

Time: Noon–1:00 PM

FREE EVENT

Author Jack El-Hai will discuss his groundbreaking new biography of neurologist
and psychiatrist Walter Freeman, featured in the PBS documentary The
Lobotomist. El-Hai, whose work is based in part on archival research in
Freeman’s personal papers at the George Washington University, takes readers
into one of the darkest chapters of American medicine—the desperate attempt
to treat the hundreds of thousands of psychiatric patients in need of help
during the middle decades of the twentieth century, before the introduction of
effective psychiatric medication in the 1950s. A book signing will follow this
event.

Catholic and Feminist: The Surprising History of the American Catholic Feminist
Movement by Mary Henold

Time: Noon–1:00 PM

FREE EVENT

Mary J. Henold, assistant professor of history at Roanoke College, will explore
and sign Catholic and Feminist, the first history of American Catholic feminism.
Covering the movement from the 1960s through the early 1980s, Henold
shows that although Catholic feminists had much in common with their sisters
in the larger American feminist movement, Catholic feminism was distinct and
had not been simply imported from outside.
