I'm not a historian but my work in climate justice arena has offered up some information that might be useful. In a Dec 2007 article in the proceedings of the NAS, John F Morton wrote, albeit in a climate change context, about subsistence agriculture, smallholder agriculture, pastoralists, commercial smallholder production, and commercial crop production. May not be what you are looking for.
