Robin,

You bet, I do! One possibility is Virginius Dabney's Virginia, The New
Dominion, which the University Press of Virginia has kept in print, but it
is very long and also somewhat outdated, having been first published in
1971.

My colleague Sara Bearss wrote The Story of Virginia for the Virginia
Historical Society, when she worked there. It is well written and well
illustrated, albeit short.

My personal (and shameless) choice for a good, general book on Virginia
history is The Hornbook of Virginia History: A Ready-Reference Guide to the
Old Dominion's People, Places, and Past. Among the illustrated book's
contents are a concise history of the commonwealth, total population
figures, 1610-1990, lists of all the governors, lieutenant governors, and
attorneys general from 1607 to 1994 (when the latest edition was published),
brief histories of the counties and cities, concise descriptions of famous
houses, places of worship, and other historical sites, and brief histories
of the colleges and universities in Virginia.

The Hornbook of Virginia History can be purchased from the Library of
Virginia (see URL for the Library Web site below) or through your local book
seller.

John

(Hey, my brother's e-mail address begins "NiceDeal4U," it runs in the

Subject: VA hist book suggestion

I have been asked to recommend a good, general book on Virginia history -
any suggestions?

Thanks,
Robin Gabriel
