J. G. A. Pocock's _Machiavellian Moment_ (and other works), Bernard Bailyn's _Ideological Origins of the American Revolution_, Gordon Wood's _Creation of the American Republic_, and Forrest McDonalds _Novus Ordo Seclorum_ are four titles that come to mind. The literature is vast and fascinating.
