Mr. Kirkland:

Richmond fell on or about April 2, 1865.
Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865.

Most, if not all, general news Richmond newspapers ceased publications before April 1 and some of the papers that resumed after the fall of Richmond were published by Union forces.

The Virginia Newspaper Project (VNP) created a couple of blog entries about a year ago that to some extent addresses your question:

and the follow up:

To read newspapers online, such as the Richmond Dispatch, you can go to Virginia Chronicle: http://virginiachronicle.com

And a resource we think is sometimes underutilized is the Newspaper in Virginia Bibliography: http://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/vnp/

if you want to see which papers were published during a certain time period. Consider it a stand-alone card catalog just for newspapers.

Here's what Team VNP found about Richmond newspapers published in 1865. The notes on record refer to some of the publisher/editorial information we gathered while cataloging individual titles.

* Richmond Times: this may be best bet for inclusive 1865 holdings, the Virginia Historical Society has a fairly complete run of April-Dec 1865

* Richmond Whig/Daily Richmond Whig/Richmond Whig: Note on record explains: Suspended Apr. 1, 1865 by Union forces; resumed Apr. 4, 1865 under Union auspices, with new numeration, v. 1, no. 1.

* Daily Richmond Enquirer (Daily Ed, Semiweekly.): ceases publication April 1, 1865 and then picks up again Oct. 30.

Note on record says: Suspended Apr. 1-Oct. 30, 1865.

* Daily Richmond Examiner: Note on record: Suspended Apr. 3, 1865; resumed Dec. 9, 1865.

* Richmond Whig and Public Advertiser: looks like it ceased around Mar. 31, 1865 and picked back up Aug. 1.

* Daily Dispatch: Published from 1850-1884, but no 1865 issues after March of that year

More obscure titles with 1865 holdings (these are all pretty incomplete for 1865):

Southern Punch: Ceased Feb. 1865

Magnolia: Ceased Apr. 1, 1865

Children's Friend: One issue from 1865

Semi Weekly Times: Began in Sept. 1865

Episcopal Methodist: Began July 19, 1865 (But VNP database only has 1866 and later)

Christian Observer: Publication dates say 1861-1869, no issues from April and May 1865, but there are issues from Jan-Mar and Aug-Dec

Central Presbyterian: Published 1856-1908, no holdings between Mar and July 1865

Richmond Christian Advocate: Published 1837-1901, no holdings between Mar and September 1865

Sentinel (Daily and Weekly editions): Publication dates are 1863-1866, but there are no holdings after Mar. 1865

Soldier's Paper: Only holding for 1865 is April 1

Weekly Dispatch/Semiweekly Dispatch: Published 1850-1903 but no 1865 holdings

**Republic begins May 10, 1865

Evening Courier: Ceased publication Mar. 31, 1865

Commercial Bulletin: Began May 6, 1865

Religious Herald: Published from 1828 to present, nothing between March and Oct. 1865

Virginische Zeitung: Published 1861-1926, no holdings for 1865

Richmonder Anzeiger: Published 1864-1865, nothing after Mar. 29, 1865

Southern Planter: Published from 1841-1867, no holdings from 1865

Southern Illustrated News: Published 1862-1865, no holdings after Feb 1865

We hope this helps.
