A quick perusal of the Richmond personal property tax records under letter W from 1800 to 1814 indicates that Charles Wills likely arrived in 1801 with a slave over the age of 12. By 1803 his +12 slave holding increased to 2 and in 1804 he added 3 horses and 2 chariot wheels to his tax liabilities. By 1807 he was back down to the single slave over the age of 12 and then is no longer listed on the Richmond personal property taxes. He may have been there, but without any taxable property that would place him on the rolls. I do not have the same access to the land taxes for Richmond for these years. I also did not look through the whole lists. He may have gone into partnership with someone and the firms name may have been  so and so & Wills and would then have appeared elsewhere on the lists. So a more complete examination of the tax lists may produce more information. I hope this may help. An examination of the advertisements in the Richmond newspapers would surely be useful for any advertisements for his firm and or stores--good luck--Mick Nicholls
