In my experience, oral "history" is generally nothing more than  genealogical 
social climbing.  C.f .Sally Hemming's descendants.
 
I think what you should refer to is oral tradition which, if  corroborated, 
may have some historical significance.  However, until  then it is just "folks" 
(a/k/a people) and their related events  trying to  be bigger and more 
important than they actually are.
