Not sure of how to measure either "significant" or "reputable," but I posit in a piece forthcoming at the W&M Bill of Rights Journal that W&M before antebellum days was a hotbed of unease about slavery, and that that unease was forgotten as the College sought after the Late Unpleasantness to avoid as much as it could any discussion of slavery in the narrative of its history .

Have we got a college? Have we got a football team?....Well, we can't afford both. Tomorrow we start tearing down the college.
