Yes, in at least one case that I know of.  In January of 1864,  
Pickett was assigned the task of assembly a heterogenous group  
including the 7th VA Infantry to retake New Bern, North Carolina.   
They reached New Bern on May 3 but were immediately recalled to  
Virginia to face the new Federal offensive.
