Pray for me. I'll end up at Sunday night mass at St. Michael's.

wonderful time!!

Richmond's Revolutionary Patriots - Cemetery Walking Tour

Sunday, May 15 at 10 AM at St. John's Church

Richmond and its citizens played a pivotal role in the American
Revolution. This tour will highlight the experiences and sacrifices of
Richmond's Revolutionary patriots as we walk among their final resting
places at St. John's Church Cemetery and Shockoe Hill Cemetery.

Twenty-eight Revolutionary patriots are interred in the grounds
surrounding St. John's Church, founded in 1741 and the original location of
Patrick Henry's immortal "Liberty or Death" speech in March 1775. Learn
about patriots such as Edward Carrington, close friend of George Washington
and Quartermaster General for General Nathanael Greene's Army; James Wood,
colonel of the 8th Virginia that fought at the Battle of Brandywine and
later governor of Virginia; George Wythe, signer of the Declaration of
Independence and teacher of John Marshall and Thomas Jefferson; and more.

Following our graveyard tour of St. John's Church, join us at Shockoe Hill
Cemetery, established in 1822 and the final resting place of twenty-seven
Revolutionary War patriots. Hear about the lives of heroes like John
Marshall, who fought in battles such as Great Bridge and later became Chief
Justice of the United States Supreme Court; William Foushee, an army surgeon
during the war and Richmond's first mayor; Peter Francisco, known as the
"Giant of the Revolution" who fought in a number of battles and confronted
Tarleton's Raiders; and others.

  Suggested Donation: $10 per person

The funds collected from this tour will be used to provide Mr. Young's
John Paul Jones program or our Richmond Alive! educational program, "Life of
the Revolutionary War Soldier," to the students of a school with limited
funding.

Below are directions to St. John's Church from 95-N and 95-S.

To St. John's Church from 95-N:
Take exit 74-C (Broad Street), and when the exit forks, stay to the RIGHT.
The exit will merge with Oliver Hill Way, which becomes 17th Street. Turn
LEFT at the first light onto E. Broad Street. St. John's Church is located
at the top of the hill, on the right, at 24th and E. Broad streets.

To St. John's Church from 95-S:
Take exit 74-B (Franklin Street). Turn LEFT at the 2nd light onto E. Main
Street. Turn LEFT onto 25th Street. Turn LEFT onto E. Grace Street, which
is the street that goes behind the church.

Street parking is available in the block surrounding the church, although
there is little to no street parking on E. Broad (due to bus parking only,
construction). The main entrance is on E. Broad Street near 24th Street,
and there's an accessible entrance on 24th Street - the elevator is located
inside the little gate. I will meet everyone inside the main gate.

From St. John's Church to Shockoe Hill Cemetery:
Drive west down E. Broad Street, toward downtown Richmond. Turn RIGHT onto
3rd Street, which merges with 4th and 5th Streets to become 5th Street as it
crosses underneath Interstate 95. AFTER crossing under the highway, turn
LEFT at the first light onto Hospital Street. Turn LEFT into Shockoe
Cemetery and park.
