I queried my undergrad institution about crosses in Lee Chapel at W&L
(private, doesn't get government money, doesn't want it). Here is the response I
got. If no crosses was the policy of RE Lee, that's good enough for me.

Because Lee Chapel is a non-consecrated space, there is no cross or crucifix
in the chapel. Officiates will, upon occasion, bring one to the building
for a special service.

Remember, Lee specifically did not wish to consecrate the space so that it
could be used for all purposes, both sacred and secular. The very first event
held in the building was graduation of 1868 and it is still used by the
University for general use, i. e. freshmen orientation, convocations, speakers
and awards assemblies.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if I can be of
further assistance.
