Mr. Colvin,

The Library of Virginia's Virginia Untold digital project has many of the surviving free registers indexed and digitized. https://lva.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?vid=01LVA_INST:VU

If you select "Search by Record Type" at the top of the main Virginia Untold webpage, and scroll down alphabetically, you'll find "Free Registers."

We are continuing the project to scan all extant free registers, which began with an NHPRC grant to reformat and index registers from 19 localities. https://uncommonwealth.virginiamemory.com/blog/2022/03/30/free-negro-registers-from-virginia-untold-now-available-on-from-the-page/

Greetings:

I noticed from the collection cited in this latest VA-Hist listserv, (second entry in the Uncommon Wealth Blog, "Description For All Virginians: Inclusive Description Efforts At The Library Of Virginia," there is a collection, "Powhatan County (Va.) Registers of Free Negroes and Mulattoes, 1800-1865". The description in that entry mentions these lists were required to be kept in all VA counties. I'm wondering if these lists are cataloged separately by county or indexed in any way and have they been digitized? I research in mix race marriages from the antebellum and beyond so these records may be valuable to my work.

Kind regards,

Alex Colvin,

Subject: Description For All Virginians: Inclusive Description Efforts at the Library of Virginia

Since its establishment in 1823, the Library of Virginia has been managed and staffed largely by white, middle class, cisgender people. Consequently, the collections stored at LVA and their descriptions disproportionately reflect the experiences and perspectives of this group. Even when present in the records, marginalized communities and their role in Virginia history have been omitted or misrepresented in the Library’s catalog records and finding aids. Archivists, librarians, and other LVA staff have been working together for the past two years to try to find ways to address these issues. By reviewing professional standards and the work of peer institutions, the Inclusive Description Working Group at the Library of Virginia is attempting to create better policies for Inclusive Description practices to improve access to the history of all Virginians.
Read today's UncommonWealth post to learn more about Inclusive Description and see some before and after examples:
