DNA can do a lot more than prove a direct descent. And DNA is not a
static issue. It advances seem to come in geometric rather than
arithmetic progression. What it couldn't do a few years ago, it can
now and what it can't now, in a few years will undoubtedly be viewed
as low level, etc. Given enough samples, it can determine kinship
groups. After all, 1997 was the first time it was used for
genealogical purposes so we're not exactly talking about an old
process here.

The more extensive the test, the more far-reaching the results. For
instance, I am working on a graveyard for which the family knew of 10
individuals buried there. We ended up with 20, of which 17 had
presumably testable material. DNA testing is underway to enable us to
determine the relationships of the burials to each other, from which
we will then probably be able to show which burial is which person.
And from that we can leap off 1 step into speculation about familial
relationships based upon proximity.
