Craig Kilby's message this morning about special characters and even
some normal characters, such as quotation marks, sometimes getting
garbled in Va-Hist messages reminded me that perhaps I should remind
subscribers that the computer software that transmits all Va-Hist
messages is not set to accomodate fancy formatting. Whether it can be, I
frankly don't yet know. In the meantime, please keep in mind that the
several hundred subscribers to Va-Hist have as many different computers
and Internet service providors and different settings on their computers
as you can imagine and that therefore in order for messages to reach
everyone in the clear (as the military people say), it is wise to
transmit the simplest form of text message possible without customized
or aesthetic embellishments.

The software also automatically kills all attachments. This is a prudent
virus protection policy that I could not change even if I wanted to.
