I was pursuing the early minute & order books of Nelson County, VA, looking
for proof that Hudson Martin (1752-1830) was appointed Sheriff in 1810.
Found the proof. However, before he served as Sheriff, you can find his
name at the end of many court cases as:
Gent. Justice Hudson Martin or Hudson Martin, Gent. Justice. I am assuming
this means Gentleman Justice?

On the Nelson County Genealogy Group on Facebook a member posted that the
Governor appointed 38 Justices to Nelson County when it formed in 1808.
Would these Justices be similar to jury members today? Were they paid to
serve just as jury members are today? And are these the same Justices that
the Nelson County minute & order books refer to as Gent. Justice?
