Here are two replies to the question about black owners of slaves. One
came with much electronic noise, so I extracted the messages and post
them together here:

try Larry Koger, Black Slaveowners: Free Black Slave Masters in South
Carolina, 1790-1860 or Loren Schweninger, Black Property Owners in the
South, 1790-1915--Mick Nicholls On Jan 11, 2010

Anthony Johnston was one of the original blacks who came to Virginia in
1919. He later became a slave holder when the Virginia court awarded him
an Indenture who had fled. There were other middle class black freeman
who also held slaves in Virginian and throughout the south. South
Carolina and Louisiana had significant numbers of free blacks who held
land and owned slaves. Something that is not considered "politically
correct" today when discussing the "Peculiar Institution." I find it
interesting that when the facts to do not aligne with the myth or
expected outcome that no one wants to discuss it.

I started doing research on this over ten years ago and most of my hard
copy materials are in my "cave" at home. These were just quick ones I
was somewhat familiar with.

Respectfully,

Carl
