Jim:

I don't know what period you are interested
in, but the first map that I know of that
shows details is one called "Wood's Map"
surveyed about 1820. Each county had such
a map, but only about half of them survive.
Copies are at the Virginia State Library,
the Virginia Historical Society and at the
Library of Congress. Each of these have
some of the originals; and they have copies
made from the originals of the ones they
are missing. Not only are the streams
and roads shown, but also places of
businesses and some residences.

If you live near enough to visit one of
the above, you should do it. LVA may have
included them as some of their digital
offerings, but it is hard, at least for
me, to read large items on the internet.

The Patrick County one is in "A Supplement
to the 1810 Census of Virginia" along with
the 1810 tax list.
