WE felt the same way about the yankees here, after the war. North Texas was
the bane of the northern troops. Upshur, Fannin, Hunt, and Red River, were
all distinctly dislike by the Union Troops. Upshur was especially disliked
by Sheridan.

John Philip Adams,
Houston, Texas

First, Sheridan was put in command of the Department of Louisiana and Texas,
a Reconstruction military district (can't remember the number.) He was
razed in New Orleans. Regarding Texas he wrote Grant that if he owned Hell
and Texas, he would live in Hell and rent Texas out. Sheridan and the South
was not a love match.
