Thanks to all who responded to my query about how troops got home after the surrender at Appomattox and other places. I wonder if any one has produced a map showing what units were where in the CSA at the time of the surrender? Getting home via a 2 day walk is one thing going from Appomattox to the Valley, but McGowan's South Carolinians at Petersburg and various other units from farther south must have had an incredible time getting back. One wonders how many actually made it back as compared with those who died along the road?
