Dear VA-HIST Subscribers,

I want to make you aware of an event taking place on Friday, October 25,
2002, at 7:00 P.M. in the Lecture Hall at the Library of Virginia.
Award-winning traditional musician Mike Seeger will perform in concert,
drawing on his broad repertoire of ballads, blues, dance tunes,
instrumentals, and other musical forms rooted in the traditions of Virginia.
The concert is being held in conjunction with the Library's exhibition,
"Virginia Roots Music: Creating and Conserving Tradition."

A longtime resident of Lexington, Virginia, Mike Seeger conducted seminal
fieldwork in the Old Dominion, recording and interviewing folk musicians
such as Dock Boggs and Leslie Riddle. A remarkable musician in his own
right, he won first prize in the banjo category of the Galax Old Fiddler's
Convention in 1958, and pioneered the revival of traditional music as a
member of the New Lost City Ramblers. Seeger has recorded or edited nearly
thirty documentary recordings and more than forty recordings of his own
music and he has received five Grammy nominations. In 1995 he received the
Ralph J. Gleason Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grateful Dead's Rex
Foundation for his tireless efforts to preserve folk culture. In the words
of the award citation, Mike Seeger "remains one of our great musical and
cultural resources. To see him perform is to experience the richness of our
traditions."

The concert is free but advance tickets are required for admittance. To
obtain tickets, please call 804-692-3555. Seating is limited for this
concert and tickets are limited to two per person. This free concert is
sponsored by a Folklife Grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and
the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy and by the
Library of Virginia Foundation.

If you have any questions about this event, please contact me.
