Call for Papers: Culture, Conflict, Consequences: Centennial Seminar
Carroll County, Va Courthouse Tragedy of 1912, March 12-13, 2012

Papers and presentations are being solicited for a community sponsored
conference commemorating the centennial of the 1912 shootout at the
Carroll County courthouse in Hillsville, Virginia. The brochure calling
for submissions states, "On March 14, 1912 gunfire erupted in the
Carroll County Courthouse during the trial of Mr. Floyd Allen.
When the smoke cleared the dead included Judge Thornton Massie,
Commonwealth Attorney William Foster, and Sheriff Lewis Webb. Several
others were wounded including the defendant Floyd Allen." This event has
been the subject of long-standing controversy in the community and has
been written about and retold in books, ballads, dramatic productions,
and news commentary. It will be the topic of its first academic seminar
on the eve of its Centennial.

The conference sponsors welcome submissions from graduate students and
scholars in any relevant field. More information about the conference
itself can be attained by going to the website:
www.courthousetragedy1912.com . To submit a topic proposal: Write a
letter to the Centennial Committee (address below) giving your name,
address, phone number, a brief academic biography and an abstract in
which you describe your topic. DEADLINE for proposals is: June 30, 2011.
