ususally out of the state; to Louisiana; Mississippi, if the slave did something
really bad to the Dry Tortugas off of Florida. Some of the slaves accused of
conspiring with Denmark Vesey were sent there. Also, transportation as a
sentence can simply mean, being sold out of the state; the punishment is the
slave never sees his/her family again; and heads to worse conditions in the deep
south; the state does not have to reimburse the owner for executing a slave, and
Va. gets rid of a criminal slave for good. It is not all that uncommon in the
upper south and even in SC.
