That is a good alternative Linda but how are people to know if your
gedcom contains a name someone on the outside seeks?

Eric,
I agree with your position. I have a distant cousin who I had never been
in contact with. She asked to share information, but had very little to
share. 
The next thing I knew she is asking me to co-author a book with her. Of
course, my thought was whose information was she planning to use?
Needless to say, I told her I was not interested.

My substitute for getting my info out is a private closed group on
Facebook. 
I am the administrator and have the only say as to who is allowed into
the group. That way family gets the info and anyone who I deem
trustworthy enough to have it.  Also when I see my information somewhere
where it shouldn't be and  I can address it in the group.
