A Lunchtime Talk with VFH Fellow Mary Lyons
Dark Passage: How 75 Boys, 100 Slaves, and 800 Irish Men
Fought to Build the Longest Railroad Tunnel in the World

Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 12:00 PM - 1: 00 PM at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities

Author Mary Lyons has invited a group of 7th graders to the VFH to critique her work-in-progress on the Virginia Blue Ridge Tunnel. Guided by the students' questions, she will explore why and how workers blasted through the one-mile-long tunnel; who won the yearly labor conflicts; the 1854 cholera epidemic; and an archaeological dig scheduled for 2012. Photographs that represent laborers who lived and died at the tunnel between 1850 and 1860 will accompany her presentation. Lectures are free and open to the public.

Lyons is a full-time writer of historical novels and nonfiction literature. She is the author of nineteen books for young readers. Her Book awards include the Golden Kite from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, three Carter G. Woodson awards from the National Council of Social Studies, and the Aesop Award from the National Folklore Society.

A complimentary lunch will be provided. The presentation will be held in Room 101 at the VFH, 145 Ednam Drive, Charlottesville. For more information, contact Ann White Spencer, aspencer@virginia, or visit our web site www.VirginiaHumanities.org<http://www.VirginiaHumanities.org>.
