Dear VA-HIST friends:
Notices of this vacancy are appearing in many newspapers this week and next. I hope it is not inappropriate to bring the opening to the attention of the VA-HIST subscribers. This is the full job description we are sending to those who call or write after seeing the newspaper ads.
    Jon Kukla
    Executive Vice-President and CEO
Red Hill - The Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation

                    Associate Curator vacancy

ABILITIES REQUIRED: College-level training in history, humanities, or related field. Ability to follow through and coordinate delegated projects in cooperation with staff, trustees, and contractors/vendors. Computer literacy and communication skills. Adaptable to working closely with others in a rural setting. High-school or middle-school teaching, business experience, and/or graduate training advantageous.

DUTIES: The Associate Curator reports to the Executive Vice-President of the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation and also works in cooperation with the Curator, Office Manager, selected volunteers, and/or part-time employees. Work assignments typical of this newly created position will include:

· Assisting the Executive Vice-President as day-to-day project liaison for landscape, archaeology, repair, exhibition, construction, or outreach projects.

· Identifying, recruiting, and coordinating service providers/vendors as needed.

· Coordinating faculty, facilities, transportation, and recruitment arrangements for an annual summer institute for high-school and middle-school teachers.

· Assisting the Executive Vice-President with public relations; drafting press releases, newsletter articles, or grant applications; documentary and publicity photography.

· Supporting the Curator with museum operations, including updating and computerization of accession and insurance records, care of artifacts, structures, and exhibits.

· Administering copyright permissions for use of Red Hill images.

All members of the staff help welcome visitors and guests, this requires an ability to meet the public and capacity to acquire a general knowledge of Patrick Henry's life at Red Hill - especially for school and tour groups and especially busy days (Fourth of July, Living History Day, annual meetings).

The PHMF employs maintenance workers to keep up the grounds and clean the inside of the museum-visitor's center and the historic buildings periodically. Daily maintenance is done by the staff, including but not limited to such tasks as raising and lowering flags, sweeping buildings and sidewalks, dusting, carrying items to or from the visitors' center attic, removing fallen branches, picking up litter, emptying trash cans, cleaning restrooms, and hauling trash to the dump. All Red Hill staff assist with these tasks.

COMPENSATION: Salary will be confirmed in writing when the position is offered. Cost-of-living and merit raises conform to the PHMF's fiscal year 1 July - 30 June. The position is covered by social security and workers' compensation. A basic health insurance plan covering the employee is paid by the PHMF; the cost of dependents' coverage is borne by the employee.

WORKDAYS AND VACATIONS. Red Hill is open to the public every day of the year except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day, and is operated by a full-time equivalent staff of four. Red Hill employees normally work a five-day workweek, with ten days' vacation each year, plus federal holidays. The fireworks celebration on July 4th is a major public event at Red Hill. All staff are expected to work July 4th and occasional weekend days or other holidays. Compensatory time for these days, as the regular ten days of vacation, will be taken in coordination with the schedules of other staff members.
