The Library of Virginia Book Talk Series
Presents
Many Minds, One Heart: SNCC’s Dream for a New America
By Wesley C. Hogan

Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at noon

The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce that Wesley Hogan will be with
us to discuss and sign her new work, Many Minds, One Heart: SNCC’s Dream
for a New America at noon on Wednesday, January 9, 2008. The Student
Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) broke open the caste system in
the American South between 1960 and 1965. In her new book, Hogan
explores how the organization fostered significant social change in such a
short time. She offers new insights into the internal dynamics of SNCC as well
as the workings of the larger civil rights and Black Power movement of which it
was a part. Hogan shows that SNCC laid the foundation for the emergence of
the New Left and created new definitions of political leadership during the Civil
Rights and Vietnam eras. She traces the ways other social movements—such
as Black Power, women’s liberation, and the anti-war movement—adapted
practices developed within SNCC to apply to their particular causes.

Wesley C. Hogan is an assistant professor of history and co-director of the
Institute for the Study of Race Relations at Virginia State University.

The Library of Virginia is located at 800 East Broad Street in downtown
Richmond. Free parking is available under the building.
