USING BUSINESS RECORDS
TO RESEARCH PRINCE WILLIAM HISTORY

Business records are often overlooked when researching families and local history. They can add detail and color to a report, and are especially important when other types of records are missing. For example, Prince William has lost many court and church records during the eighteenth century. We are lucky to have significant runs of records from several stores that operated in Dumfries, the business hub of Prince William at that time. RELIC volunteer Margaret Binning has prepared an index to people who had accounts with either of two Dumfries stores: Dumfries Stores Ledgers Index, 1758-1776. http://eservice.pwcgov.org/library/digitalLibrary/ See under Historic Records, 1700-1800. This index will lead you to the records of Daniel Payne's Store, 1758-1764 and the John Glassford Store, 1758-1776. We have a verbatim transcript of the Payne ledger, prepared by Charles and Virginia Hamrick (Colonial Supermarket: Daniel Payne's Ledger ... Athens, Ga.: New Papyrus, 2007). The original manuscript is at the Maryland Historical Society. RELIC has microfilm of the Glassford ledgers for all its Virginia stores (the originals are at the Library of Congress).
The ledgers can tell you the dry goods and notions that your ancestor bought, and how much tobacco they paid for them. What do these objects tell you? -- An ivory comb? Various fabrics such as Irish linen, dowlass, oznabrigg, cotton? "120 panes window glass 7 by 9"? 500 8d nails? A Bible? A woman's furr'd hat? One steel watch chain?
And the person who pays the account or picks up the merchandise can provide a genealogical clue: Mrs. Lucy Peek's account mentions "One pack cards per Son William." Benjamin Porter's account: "Sundrys to Mary Chase per your brothers order." Ann Farrow's account: "Sort pd. for Rum per Son Thornton."
Many business records have yet to be transcribed or indexed. RELIC has microfilm of Smith, Huie and Alexander [Company], Dumfries daybook, 1791-1794, which is available on interlibrary loan from the Library of Virginia (529 pages, Prince William reel 91). The Library of Virginia also has a merchant's daybook for the year 1779 from an unknown Dumfries store (26 pages, accession 34355). The Manassas Museum has on display a Dumfries business register of an unknown store from the 1790s. Another ledger from that time period was also seen on display at Dumfries Town Hall some years ago. When studying the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries many more store records are likely to be found. They just need to be made more readily accessible.
