Everyone,

Join us on Wednesday, 10 October, at noon, for a talk on “Evergreen Cemetery: Uncovering Richmond’s Premier African American Burial Ground” by John Shuck, the coordinator of the volunteer effort to preserve this historic cemetery. The talk will be at the Larrick Center, Court End Room A, on the north end of Ninth Street on VCU’s MCV campus (http://www.maps.vcu.edu/mcv/).

In 1891, Evergreen Cemetery was established as a preeminent resting place for Virginia’s most influential African-American residents. These include Maggie Walker, president and founder of the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, and John Mitchell, Jr., champion of African-American rights and editor of the Richmond Planet newspaper. By the early 1970s, the cemetery had fallen into disrepair. In 1975, volunteers from the Maggie L. Walker Historical Foundation led an effort to restore Evergreen to its original glory.

For the past four years, John Shuck has led volunteers from VCU and the wider community to restore the cemetery, along with other like-minded groups, but much remains to be done. Come hear about one of Richmond’s most threatened, yet vital, historic sites.

Free and open to the public. Bring your lunch or get lunch at the Larrick Center.

John
