I started with The American Heritage series book The Civil War, by Bruce
Catton. There is also a "Golden Book" version of this title from 1961.

Subject: Re: [VA-HIST] Book recommendation needed: Gettysburg battle

Thanks, Paul and Joe Mc (hope I'm not overlooking anyone else) for this
suggestion. Your recommendations are enough to make me decide to read
The Killer Angels myself, which I will now do.

The nine-year-old in question, however, is a very bright and perceptive
young man who hasn't yet discovered that reading can be exciting instead
of a homework chore. The deal is this: if he wants to go to Gettysburg
this summer to watch the reenactment of the battle with Aunt
Jurretta--as he very much wants to do, having recently developed a keen
interest in historical wars--he is going to have to learn more about the
Civil War than he's been able to pick up
from TV shows and conversations with his nine-year-old buddies.
Which means he's going to have to do a little reading in advance.
Hence my question to the list.

Ongoing suggestions for CW materials, and particularly Gettysburg
materials, suited to a nine-year-old's reading still welcome. . . .
