CREATED EQUAL FILM/DISCUSSION SERIES: THE MARCH
Time: Thursday, April 23, 6:00-8:30 pm
Place: Robins Family Forum, Virginia Historical Society; the program is free and no pre-registration is necessary.

The Virginia Historical Society is once again hosting Created Equal, a film/discussion series that focuses on themes related to civil rights, human rights, and social justice in American history. The first documentary, The March, will be shown at the VHS on Thursday, April 23. The film tells the story of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which is today remembered for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. At the time however, the march was extremely controversial. It was put on by a coalition of civil rights and workers' rights organizations, each with its own agenda, and was opposed by the Kennedy Administration and FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.
After the film, Emilie Raymond, associate professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University and author of Stars for Freedom: Hollywood, Black Celebrities, and the Civil Rights Movement, will make comments.
Light refreshments will be available before the film, which will begin at 6:30. The March and the other programs in this series are hosted by the VHS in partnership with the Richmond Peace Education Center. The program is supported in part by Diversity Richmond's VHS Guy Kinman Research Award.
