For those of us who have neither knowledge of the law nor the resources to
check out those cases, can someone give us a brief description?

reference
Ex Parte  Merryman, Federal Cases No.  9487 (1861); and Ex parte Milligan.
71 U.S. 2 (1866)  before you criticize a failure of Virginians to relegate
Lincoln to  sainthood.
