First, you need to know the definition of Dower:

' Dower ' A common law that entitles a widow to a portion of her husband's estate in absence of a will. The provision of dower allows the wife to provide for herself and any children born during the marriage. In most circumstances, the widow is granted up to one-third interest in her husband's assets.

So, it appears she was married before and giving up her property claim associated with it.

Subject: [VA-HIST] Genealogy Question

I want to thank those who answered my previous question re the use of "Boarder" for "room & board" in a City Directory. They clearly answered my question. This forum is an infinite source of knowledge.

I'll try again-New Question: what does "-----Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Collup appeared in court to relinquish dower right to Robert Hall in land conveyed March 10, 1723" mean? (in PG County records)

Thanks
