I know self-promotion is bad, but here goes: I have a lengthy chapter
on the events of Reconstruction in the Danville/Martinsville region in
"The Hairstons -- An American Family in Black and White." The chapter
is called "The Scroll of Names" and in it you will find the stories of
white and black families. I don't recall seeing anything in the
records about census takers having problems, but I can tell you that a
more dangerous profession in Virginia was teaching, if your students
were black, that is.
