Ted Delaney, Archivist and Curator of the Old City Cemetery Museums &
Arboretum and Phillip Wayne Rhodes, Director of Jones Memorial Library,
both of Lynchburg and co-authors of Free Blacks of Lynchburg, Virginia,
1805-1865, offer an illustrated talk about “free people of color” in
antebellum Lynchburg and their influence on “colored society” in the Gilded
Age.

The talk will focus on the importance of records of free blacks to African-
American genealogists and how family history research brought these
forgotten families to light.  Roanokers will be especially interested in
hearing about the Crichton-DuPree family, descended from free blacks in
Lynchburg and residents of Roanoke in the twentieth century.
