Henry,
My ancestor, Patty Bowden (1750-1830), was born on the Washington Plantation
(Popes Creek) to Mary Bowden (1730-about 1810). When looking for records on
her, I found some in the name Patty, and others in Martha. Someone said that
it goes like Martha, Matty, Patty (sounds like an Irish poem). Her mother
Mary was also nicknamed Mol, or Molly, which did not make sense to me. But I
heard these were common nicknames for Martha, and Mary during Colonial days.
