Prof. Meyers's suggestion that Jefferson was impressed and moved by the
Bray School is a very astute observation. It's unfortunate for our history
that by the time Jefferson wrote to Pleasants in 1797, his hopes had
totally shifted from emancipation to expulsion. As Jurretta Heckscher
notes, Jefferson wrote of education and training for African-Americans not
as a goal but as the prelude to their expulsion.
