Each year the Virginia Museum of History & Culture recognizes the author of the best article to appear in the museum's quarterly journal, the Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, as well as an author of a work in the field of Virginia biography.

The William M. E. Rachal Award was established in 1985 for the overall best article to appear in the Virginia Magazine. Each year a committee of the journal's editorial advisory board selects the author whose essay has best advanced the cause of scholarship in Virginia history. The award honors the long-time editor of the journal, Will Rachal, who served from 1953 to 1980.

The William M. E. Rachal Award winner for 2017 is William Fernandez Hardin for his article entitled "'This Unpleasant Business': Slavery, Law, and the Pleasants Family in Post-Revolutionary Virginia" (vol. 125, no. 3)

The Richard Slatten Award was established in 1997, thanks to a generous bequest, to recognize excellence in the field of Virginia Biography. This prize honors the person whose work made the most significant contribution to biographical study.

The Richard Slatten Award winner for 2017 is Jon Kukla for his biography entitled Patrick Henry: Champion of Liberty (Simon & Schuster)
