A graduate student at Virginia Tech asked me to forward this inquiry to VA-HIST:

"Can you recommend any good sources for information about the influence of the Virginia planter class on Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase in 1803?  I'm specifically interested in the influence of Virginia slaveholders on the issue of extending slavery into that territory."

I have already recommended Jon Kukla's "A Wilderness So Immense."
