Aunt Orlean (Orlene) Puckett successfully delivered over one thousand babies
in Carroll, Patrick, and Floyd Counties, Virginia during a 49-year period.
The National Park Service erected a sign about her at Milepost 189.9 on the
Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a book about her life, and Phyllis Stump
presents a dramatic monologue titled "They Call Me Aunt Orlene". You might
contact the Orlena Hawks Puckett Institute in Asheville, North Carolina.

Subject: [VA-HIST] VA midwives and healers
Hi,
I am researching Virginia midwives and community based healers and would
like any help i can get! While the information i am finding is fascinating,
because VA wasn't big on keeping information, especially on something as
mundane as birth,and most practitioners were women, and often ethnic, and
they weren't writing, especially history--well, you know the spiel--tis
scanty. Any ideas, stories, sources?
