In 1765 there were 34 slaves attending. Two of them, Harry and John, were
children of a free African American Matthew Ashby by his wife Ann, the slave
of Samuel Spurr. Ashby, son of a white woman by a slave, purchased his wife
and two children after getting approval from the governor and Council in
1769.
