American Visions: The United States, 1800-1860, Edward Ayers newest book, explores this critical era when the new American nation and its culture took shape. It celebrates the men and women who upheld ideals of shared humanity and free expression in the face of slavery, dispossession, and war. Dr Ayers addresses the changing social, political, cultural, and religious landscapes in a nation which was also experiencing population growth and diversity, rapid expansion, and great technological innovations. Dr. Ayers presents this history through the stories of extraordinary individuals (some well-known, and some not so well-known) who dared to speak their minds, challenge the norms, and encourage others to seek new visions for our country.

Additionally, Annie Evans will join Dr. Ayers to share information about New American History.  This free online platform is dedicated to making the nation’s history more visible and useful for a broad range of audiences, especially teachers and researchers. Its core projects are Bunk, a curated remix of contemporary online content, and American Panorama, an interactive digital atlas.

Dr. Ayers is an acclaimed historian, author, educator, and is president emeritus at the
University of Richmond.  He has received the Bancroft and Lincoln Prizes for his scholarship, has been named National Professor of the Year and received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama.

Annie Evans is the Director of Education and Outreach for New American History at the University of Richmond. Annie is a National Geographic Society Grosvenor Teacher Fellow, a NatGeo Certified Educator and Trainer, and Co-Coordinator of the Virginia Geographic Alliance. With over 30 years of classroom and educational leadership experience, she designs curricula and facilitates professional learning for K-16 teachers and museum educators, focusing on Historical Thinking Skills, GeoLiteracy, Instructional Coaching, Project-Based Learning, and Performance Assessments. She hopes New American History will inspire the next generation of public historians, history educators, and civic leaders.
